Unforgiveable Sin!?
This week I was asked a rather serious question about the sin that can never be forgiven. You know, the pericope (Matthew 12:22-37) where Jesus heals a demon possessed man and the people wonder aloud “Could this be the Son of David, the Messiah?” The Pharisees, upon hearing about the miracle, give the credit to satan for the healing. Jesus then goes into what seems a diatribe mentioning Every sin or blasphemy can be forgiven - except blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which can never be forgiven. Anyone who blasphemes against me, the Son of Man, can be forgiven, either in this world or the world to come.
(It’s important to read the entire passage to get a feel where Jesus is going.)
I look at this from a much different perspective than I did years ago. While I’ll not share my thoughts yet I wonder what your take is on this question of the “unforgivable sin.”
What was Jesus really saying? If there is a sin that is unforgivable have I committed it? Didn’t Jesus take on all sin on the cross?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate that a great deal!
