Whispers of the Enemy
We all have times in our lives when we feel inadequate; places where we struggle, and areas that are less than appealing.
In Ephesians 6:12, Paul says the following:
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
What we as humans fail to realize, since we tend to be so logical and narrow-minded, is that the battles we face in life - whether they be in our personal lives, or even in real wars between nations and cultures - are waged in a spirit realm which we cannot see, or even understand. We try to reslove problems, overcome weaknesses and gain understanding through our own strength and wisdom. The failure comes not in trying, but when we engage in the battle without the power of the Holy Spirit.
Every day, the enemy of our souls tries to speak lies and deceit into your lives; he plays to our inadequacies, and wants nothing more than to “kill, steal, and destroy,” our relationship with God. On the other hand, Jesus left with us the Holy Spirit, who seeks to lift us up, encourage us, and give us hope and a future. The Spirit reveals to us our gifts and purpose in life, while standing in the gap to help us overcome our weaknesses and sin nature.
It’s an every day battle.
I have times when I wonder if I’m good enough. Am I really capable? Am I worthy? What will people think if I fail? Or if I look like an ass?
I’m human after all - and I think many of us deal with those same questions, just on different levels.
I had a great conversation with a friend last week. He reminded me of what God really thinks of me; he encouraged me by speaking truth into my life. He told me that I have to go to battle each and every day by praying and asking God to remind me of the man he created me to be, and to defend off the lies of the enemy.
I needed to walk in the power of the spirit:
Romans 8:15-16 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.
Psalm 50:10-12 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
The flesh is weak, but the spirit is willing. We can’t walk through life, overcome struggles and heartache, and draw close to God when we stand upon our own strength. The power of God’s Spirit to change lives, lift up, encourage, endure, heal, and love is repeated throughout the Old and New Testament.
So next time you’re feeling down, beat up, or unworthy, don’t allow the enemy to whisper lies into your ears. Take up your cross, follow God, and allow His Spirit to give you life, and life abundantly. Pray against the enemy. Ask God for boldness and wisdom, for he has called us “friends.” He’ll never leave us nor forsake us.
Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Am I worthy? Are you worthy? Always! Because God has made us worthy.
